Body:The Annual Stockholders Meeting was held at Spenger's Fish Grotto on the 14th of March. Seventy-eight stockholders were present, Mr. Hallikainen reported sales for 1963 were i? excess of one million dollars, an all time record for the company. Net earnings were 54 cents per share. Elections were held for directors and officers to serve for 1964. The number of directors was changed from seven to five; those serving as directors are Mr. Hallikainen, also elected chairman of the Board; Mr. Dorking, also elected vice chairman of the Board; Mr. Schimbor, Mr. Waner, and Mr. J. S. DunnetFof the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation of California at San Francisco. The officers of the company are the same as last year, except for the addition of Mr. Kaufmann as treasurer. Following the meeting a tour of the plant was conducted. Those participating were the Hallikainens, Schimbors, Waners, Dunnetts, and Hales.

Mr. J. S. Dunnett is serving as a company official for the first time. Originally from Scotland, he has been associated -with ihe Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for the past 30 years. He first joined the bank in London, later transferred to New York, Hong Kong and Manilla and now holds the office of president of the California subsidiary at San Francisco. Mr. Dunnett is a director of the British-American Chamber of Commerce and holds memberships in the World Trade Club, the Corn- mercial Club, Presidio Golf Club., and many other organizations abroad.

What Is It?? Many of you have probably noticed the large vehicle parked in the shop and have, perhaps, begun to wonder if Hallikainen Instru- ments has not begun to compete with General Motors. What has really happened is that we have purchased a new truck which George Hays will drive around the country beginning in May to service and demonstrate our equipment. George boasts that the new Metro Van has a larger engine and is much quieter than the previous truck. Those of you who have a nostalgic attachment to the old van may take consolation in the fact that it is still in the hands of a friend. Ken Kole is the new owner, New Instrument: Hugh M. O'Neill Company, the civil and structural engineers who are planning our new building, has given us a license to manufacture an instrument they developed, It is called the R. Direct Shear Soil Testing Machine, and its primary function is to deter- mine the mechanical properties of soil. This device assisted the O'Neill Company in making the discovery that there is a large deposit of mud five feet below the ground at our new building site in Richmond. (Thus, before the building construction begins, a quantity of rock heavier than the new building must be dumped on the land to cause it to settle. After the excess rock is removed, the building and the land immediately under it will "float" on the great mud lake!). The R. Direct Shear Soil Testing Machine operates more rapidly and more accurately than the previous methods of testing. A t'core" drill (a hollow drill) is used to obtain samples from the ground; several cores are drilled into the ground to obtain more accurate results, The cores are then sliced into thin samples for testing in the R, Direct Shear Soil Testing Machine. The machine applies several forces to each sample and measures the resultant effects on the sample. From the data obtained by the machine, the mechanical properties of the soil throughout the plot are determined, and the soil. may be prepared and the building foundation designed based upon these results. Since this machine has practical applications for soil mechanics and soil research, it should prove a profitable new addition to our stock of instruments.

A familiar face, that of Ralph Schramm, is to be seen around the shop these days. He has been back with the company since the 19th of March and is reolacing: Rick Netto who is ill. Bill Stairs reports &at Rick is out of the hospital now, and is recovering from his ill- ness at home: Best wishes to Rick for a speedy recovery!

Kathy Sims, formerly of our electronics depart- ment is the proud mother of a baby girl which weighed almost nine pounds at birth, The baby, Deborah, arrived on Friday, March 27, at 8~00 a.m.

Fred was freed in October If 1947 and he returned to Berlin and obtained 1 government license for the position of Machine laumeister which qualified him to teach other machinists the trade. In addition to working In eight hour day, Fred attended night school ind received his industrial engineering license. jut, suffering from a diet of potato powder and oatmeal, which was necessary because of the {erlin Blockade, our adventuresome Fred decided 10 migrate to Canada. After living and working ?or several years there, he obtained a visa to enter the United States, and with his family raveled 3600 miles around the east side of the tacky Mcantains. Reaching the Bay Area, the jolffs decided to make it their home. Fred Jerked for two other companies before coming 10 Hallikainen Instruments as a machinist. Here lis leadership potential was quickly recognized ind he became Night Foreman, and he has since assumed the position of Shop Supervisor.

Fred Wolff

The Wolffs love the outdoors and often go lamping, at such places as Crater Lake, Mt. tainier, Lassen, and Yosemite. On weekends Ihen they cannot get away, Fred and his wife Jerk on remodeling their home, which they have Been doing for five years. Fred has one step- ion who is presently in the Air Force. New Employee: The accounting department has an energetic new worker, Mary Kneisel who joined the company on February 20. Previous to her employment here, Mary worked at Marchant's where she tested calculators and adding machines. Born in Davenport, Oklahoma, Mary graduated from high school at Earlsborough, Oklahoma, and in 1942 came to California with her husband. The Kneisels have four daughters and one son. Mary spends much of her free time helping her child- ren with their homework, and sewing clothes for her daughters. She and her husband enjoy bowling and dancing. Mary thought it quite a coincidence she was hired here when she cis- covered the types of instruments which we pro- duce, because her husband is a process operator at Standard Oil.

Mary Kneisel

Tom Hale is leading the life of Tom Sawyer. It seems he worked three days too many last year and consequently Tom is "forced" to vacation an equivalent number of days this year. On one of his days off he went with his spouse to the Housewives Bowling League; on another he non- chalantly sold his house, hoping that his new house will be completed by the time he must move out of the old one. If not, Tom has clandestine plans of making our shipping room into the Hale Parlor.

Editor's Hello: By now most of you have dis- covered, either by picking up your phone, by approaching the coke machine, or by playing volly-ball that Hallikainen Instruments has a new employee. Officially in.the position of PBX-Receptionist, I have also decided to make an attempt at editing the company newspaper. Since this is a new venture for me, and because of the limitations of being a new employee, I would appreciate receiving any news items, stories, suggestions, have. and criticisms you may RA.
