FIVE YEAR EMPLOYEE: NEW FACES: On April 4th, Richard Montgomery completed a full five years with Hallikainen Instruments. It is impossible to give rrMontyf', as he is called, a job title as it would take pages to describe his job, but you can be sure, what ever it is it will be done with diligence and forethoqht. That southern accent you have been hearing on the paging system belongs to Melba Strickland, our new receptionist and billing clerk. Melba

Mont-y was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Springfield. After graduating from high school he was an apprentice mechanic and apprentice florist. During WW II he was in the NAVY serving in the Pacific area. was born in Louisiana but grew up in Richmond, California. She graduated from Richmond Union High School and attended San Francisco State College and the Little Rock University in Lit- tle Rock, Ark. Melba's ambition is to com- plete her major in English and teach school some day.

After the war Monty went back to Illinois and attended Springfield Jr. College and the James Milton University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Industry. He was work- ing at a Tire Service Co. when he was called back into the Navy during the Korean War. When the Korean War was over> Monty decided to make California his home. He worked for Kai- ser Aircraft, Delmo Victor, and E.B,M,U.D. be- fore coming to Hallikainen Instruments. Monty and his wife, Jean, have three daugh- ters, Marsha - age 15, Mary - age 10, and Mel- ody - age 9. An interesting note is that two of the girls have birthdays on December 30th and the other girl's birthday is January 4th. When Melba was married, they moved to Okla- homa, where her husband was going to Medical School and then moved to Little Rock, Ark. where she lived for 3% years. Melba and her three boys, Michael - 4%, Vincent - 8, and Jearl - 9, recently moved back to Richmond. She likes to bowl and wa- ter ski, but she says that her hobbies, rec- reation, and all spare time is taken by her boys. Before coming to Hallikainen Instruments on April 16, Melba worked for State Farm In- surance and the V. A. Monty likes to bowl and swim, but lately most of his time is taken by Hallikainen In- struments (day and night). What little time he has left is used in helping his wife make plans for her new beauty shop in the Pinole shopping center. Monty says that he is music- ally inclined by playing the juke box and has a dog, a cat and three old cars, The Mont- gomery's live in Rodeo. coming here, Dick worked at M. Greenberg's Sons in San Francisco and Beckman Instruments in Richmond. Dick, a native Californian, was born in Exeter, but lived most of his life in Richmond where he graduated from Richmond Union High School and Contra Costa College. Dick has been taking night classes at Heald Engineering College for some time. When Dick was in high school he joined the Naval Reserve and after graduating from high school went into the active Navy, spending 1 year in Hawaii and another year on the east coast. STORK STOPS: Paula Brown, formerly of our Sales Department is the proud mother of a baby girl which weighed 7 lbs. 7 02s. at birth. The baby, Lisa, arrived on Saturday, May 22nd. The stork made its next stop on Wednesday, June 16, at Arlene Lee's home,-also formerly of the Sales Department. This time he left a Dick met his wife, Dorothy, in high school and they have one daughter, Julie, who is 8 years old. For pleasure, he likes to read and go golfing. He enjoys traveling and would boy weighing 6 lbs, 14 ozs., named Michael John. like to see parts of the U.S. that he hasn't Congratulations to both girls. seen. The McGee's live in Richmond.

MORE NEW FACES: Kira Ryan is our new assembler in the Electron- ics department. Wondering how the name, Kira and Ryan got together, we found out that Kira was born in Riga, Latvia, She graduated from a private school in the same city, In 1946 Kira came to the United States, She was in New York for a short time and then came west to Petaluma, California. Kira ;larried James Ryan in the United States and they have 2 children, a boy - 16 and a girl - 17. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, bowling and working in her garden and yard. Kira also likes to go to plays, The Contra Costa Civic Theatre in El Cerrito and The Masquers Playhouse in Pt. Richmond are a coup- le of the theaters she attends. When asked if she would like to act, she replied that she didn't have the time. The Ryan's have a boat and they spend a lot of time on the Sac- ramento River with it. Before coming to H.I., Kira worked at Beck- man Instruments for 4 years and worked as a bookkeeper before that.

;Jze; Valley, our new electronic technician, or-n in Minnesota and lived there for 13 years. During WW II his father was trans- ferred by the Southern Pacific R.R, to Cali- fornia to help in the war effort, Jim has lived in the Oakland area ever since except for the time he was in the service and attend- ing school. Jim graduated from Freemont High School in Oakland and from an Electronic Trade School in Los Angeles. He also attended San Jose State. The Marine Corp claimed four years of his life, which was spent in recruiting and work- ing in public relations. All 4 years were spent in the state of California, Because of the commuting problem? Jim left United Airlines, where he had worked for 5 years, to work in the East Bay Area, as he lives in Oakland. The Valley's have three boys, ages 11, 9 and 7, Jim's interest away from H,I. is music, He is a church organist and pianist and plays pro- fessionally at times. He gives music lessons and his favorite type of music is light class- ical, but he plays all kinds. When Jim has any spare time he likes to barbecue in his back yard or experiment with control circuits in his work room at home.

BITS ABOUT 'EM: Our number one gardener, Herb Liske, fell from a ladder and was on the injured list for about three weeks. While he was recuperating, Alan Arabian filled in for him.

EARLY VACATIONS: Opal Taylor traveled a great deal during her vacation. The Taylors drove as far as Reno and had car trouble and had to trade cars in order to continue their vacation. They went to Kansas City, Missouri to visit relatives (all the immediate family were home), then on to Iowa, Minnesota for three days of fishing, North Dakota, Yellowstone Park and back to Reno (to leave the balance of their vacation money). Flo Fields spent a day of her vacation at Tahoe and the rest of the week she spent with her daughter and family at Livermore.

EARLY RISER: Stan Alter has been getting up much earlier these days. Reason - His grand- son and daughter are visiting them. They have been stationed in Germany and this is the first time Stan has seen his little grand- son.

MILITARY LEAVE: Ron Bultena, who is in the Naval Reserve, was on Military Leave for two weeks returning to work on June 28th, He was stationed at Los Alamitos for the 2 weeks.

WEDDING BELLS: George Kuehn's daughter, Di- anne, was married to Richard W. Meyers on Fri- day, June 18, at 8:00 P.M. in the Evangelical Free Church, El Sobrante. Best Wishes to the young couple.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS: Robert Peacock recently moved from Berkeley to Pinole; Ernest Shanks moved from Albany to Berkeley; land moved from San Pablo to Richmond; and mi Fagerroos changed addresses in Oak- land.

SUMMER REPLACEMENT: Mark Schimbor is the able assistant in the accounting department this summer. Mark has completed two-years at the University of Cali- fornia and will be returning there this fall, majoring in Economics. He then plans to attend law school. In his free time he likes to read and this summer he is reading material he likes, not required reading, e.g. Playboy magazine (sub- scription was given to him by his father). Mark also enjoys playing tennis and golfing.

TRAVELERS: Arthur Alston visited the Rich- field Oil Company Watson Refinery in Wilming- ton, California on May 27th & 28th. The pur- pose of the visit was to fit new pressure regulators on the KVP Analyzer and give oper- ating instructions to five instrument tech- nicians. Bob Ludlum and D. I. Roodzant of Shell Oil Co. visited the Shell Refinery at Oakville, Canada during the week of May 17th. Forrest Watson flew to Pittsburg, Pa. on June 7th to demonstrate the Automatic Osmometer. He then drove to Marietta, Ohio; Charleston, W, Va; Cinncinnati, Circleville, Columbus, Akron and Cleveland, Ohio demonstrating the same instrument. Forrest arrived back home in time to celebrate his 26th wedding anniversary on June 18th. Arthur Alston took off again on June 14th, fly- ing to Washington, D.C. (visiting The National Bureau of Standards); Wilmington; Deleware (Du- Pont); Tulsa, Okla.; Stillwater, Okla. (Okla- homa State University); Shawnee, Okla. (Sin- clair Pipe Line); Bartlesville, Okla. (Bureau of Mines); and back to Tulsa (he seemed to have a special liking for Tulsa). Arthur was as- sisting companies that have recently purchased our new instruments. When Arthur got off the train at Washington, D.C. (which he took from Wilmington to Washington) it was raining and everything made him think he was back in Man- chester, England. leans by the Bayou Swamps. The only way to get there is by ferry accross the Mississippi River from Bures, La. Mr. Waner visited the Warren Petroleum Company in regard to the operating of a KVP Analyzer. He was there from Saturday until Monday morning and was able to find the trouble. He did comment that their mosquitoes were comparible to our B-29ls. On Monday he met our representative in Houston, Texas, and went to Humble Oil in Baytown. Norm Waner made another trip to the east on May 21st. Norm, with our representative in Philadelphia, Pa. made calls to the Phil- adelphia Shipyard, Tidewater Oil in Dela- ware City and Socony Mobile in Paulsboro. From Tuesday thru Friday he attended a meet- ing of the Analysis Instrumentation Di- vision of the I.S.A. in Montreal, Canada. On Memorial Day weekend he went back to Tidewater to help them with their 50% Boil- ing Point Analyzer and was successful in getting it to operate correctly. He ar- rived back home on Friday, after being a- way from his office for two weeks.

COMPANY PICNIC PLANS: Plans are now being made for what looks like the most memorable picnic of Hallikainen Instruments. Se tember 4th has been the + date set for a oat cruise to Angel Island where the picnic will be held. Be sure to keep this date in mind.
